Fact: I feel bad for the girl.
Somewhere along the way, no one stopped to educate her and help her understand that her perspective may be extremely hurtful to the communities around her. This girl really thinks she’s right— and it’s heartbreaking.
I’m not mad.
From a student affairs and NASPA perspective, it’s just really heartbreaking that despite the tremendous efforts that UCLA (and every other university, especially in California) puts into promoting diversity and tolerance, that there are still students who lack so much education and outreach for the students who need it.
Not only has this video hurt the Asian community, but also white allies who know better. People who share her perspective put progressive white allies, who know better, acknowledge their privilege and want to reach out to underrepresented minorities, in a bad light.
So even though this video can get me LIVID, it’s important to acknowledge that this “rant” is a testament to how much we need to educate each other. Insensitivity to this extent is what makes everyday life more exclusive for so many minorities.
This may not start a revolution, but it’s important to realize that the everyday, tiny little needles of discrimination that people commit really hurt people. She may not have intended to be hateful, but her impact is what was hurtful.

People will always have their opinions of how you should live your life and the decisions you make.
One thing I learned is that at the end of the day, I’m the only person who gets to live out my decisions— I’m the one who deals with the shit that comes with them and I’m also the one who reaps the fruit.
